South Gloucestershire Opens Public Consultation on 20mph Limits for 41 Thornbury Roads

Under Department for Transport guidance the plans would combine all speed limit changes into one developer-funded legal order

Overview

  • The consultation runs until August 2 and seeks feedback on introducing 20mph speed limits across 41 roads in Thornbury linked to new housing estates.
  • Oldbury Lane’s existing 60mph limit is proposed to be reduced to 40mph to account for Thornbury’s southern expansion.
  • All the proposed speed limit changes would be enacted through a single Traffic Regulation Order funded by the relevant development companies.
  • The initiative follows June’s non-mandatory DfT guidance under Section 39 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 that encourages proactive local speed management.
  • Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood confirmed councils already have the statutory authority and government backing to set lower limits without waiting for multiple fatalities.
