South Faces Multi-Day Storms as Inland Brazil Endures Extreme Heat and Dry Air

Meteorologists warn that Santa Catarina could see near‑monthly rain totals by Saturday.

Overview

  • Forecasts for Thursday through Saturday call for persistent, heavy rain in Santa Catarina, with 50–100 mm possible around Greater Florianópolis and risks of urban flooding and travel disruption.
  • Areas at highest storm risk include the planalto and northwest of Rio Grande do Sul, the center and west of Santa Catarina, and the south and southwest of Paraná, where thunderstorms and strong wind gusts are expected.
  • In Paraná, Inmet and Simepar issued statewide storm alerts with rain up to 50 mm and winds near 60 km/h, and guidance warns of isolated hail, power outages, falling branches and localized flooding.
  • Large inland swaths of the Southeast, Center‑West and interior Northeast remain hot and very dry, with relative humidity below 30% in many areas; Inmet recorded 8% in the Federal District on Sept. 30 and issued new low‑humidity warnings that allow values near or below 12%.
  • Inmet’s monthly outlook and regional agencies project a hot, drier first half of October with more frequent afternoon storms later in the month, including wetter signals in Amapá and parts of Bahia, continued heat and dryness in Ceará, and the pre‑rainy onset in southern Piauí around mid‑month.
