South Coast AQMD Extends No-Burn Order Through Friday for Much of Southern California

Officials cite forecasted fine-particle pollution that poses health risks.

Overview

  • The extension covers large parts of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties after an initial order was prolonged twice to include Thursday and Friday.
  • The rule prohibits burning wood, pellets and manufactured fire logs in indoor and outdoor devices, and allows charcoal use only for cooking.
  • Areas excluded include the High Desert, the Coachella Valley and locations above 3,000 feet, with exemptions for homes that rely on wood heat, lack natural gas service or face temporary utility outages.
  • The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for Orange County and nearby areas through Dec. 20 at 12:15 a.m., advising residents to stay indoors, run air conditioning or HEPA purifiers and avoid devices that pull in outside air.
  • South Coast AQMD reports 15 no-burn days so far this season, with seasonal programs running September–April for ozone and November through February for fine particles.
