South Carolina Opens Season with 82-53 Victory Over South Carolina Upstate

Gamecocks boast impressive shooting with a 53.7% field goal percentage and extend their dominance in season openers against in-state rivals to five wins since 2018.

  • Ta'Lon Cooper and Meechie Johnson were the highest scorers for South Carolina, each posting 15 points, with Cooper contributing seven rebounds to match Zachary Davis for the team lead.
  • BJ Mack, Wofford transfer, and Myles Stute, Vanderbilt transfer, added 13 and 10 points respectively, with Stute adding six rebounds as well.
  • South Carolina's impressive shooting saw them making 53.7% of their shots from the floor (29 of 54) and 54.4% from the 3-point range (12 of 22).
  • Despite scoring a team high of 13 points by Justin Bailey and an additional 10 by Trae Broadnax, the South Carolina Upstate team could only manage a field goal percentage of 36.2% (21 of 58) and 26.7% from 3-point range (4 of 15).
  • Apart from the Gamecocks' strong offensive performance, the team's transfers - Cooper, Mack, Stute, and Stephen Clark - showed their experience gained from a combined 430 Division I games with 299 starts among them.
