Overview
- The state government announced the royal commission on Monday to examine how AI can be used safely and to limit harms to jobs, public services and social systems.
- Hearings are due to begin in October and the commission must deliver a final report by July 1, 2027.
- Terms of reference and three commissioners will be named within four to six weeks and the inquiry is budgeted at about $3 million.
- The commission will seek evidence from businesses, unions, tech developers, academics and creative industries and examine AI's role in health, education, industry and public services.
- The announcement follows Premier Peter Malinauskas's recent US meetings with OpenAI, Anthropic and Apple and an MOU signed with OpenAI that the government says will inform the inquiry's work and its contribution to national policy debates.
