South Africa’s Matric Class of 2025 Posts Record 88% Pass Rate

Learners receive their individual marks on 13 January as authorities enforce privacy rules that limit published lists to exam numbers.

Overview

  • The 2025 NSC was written by about 927,143 candidates across DBE, IEB and SACAI in more than 300 subjects at roughly 9,400 examination centres.
  • The IEB reported a 98.31% pass rate, with 89.12% of candidates qualifying for degree study, and its CEO attributed the slight dip to growth in participating schools and online providers.
  • SACAI recorded a 73.16% pass rate as detailed alongside the national release.
  • Accredited newspapers will publish results using examination numbers and marks only, and DBE candidates will access personal results from Tuesday.
  • Umalusi confirmed rigorous quality assurance, and officials noted rising Bachelor passes from no-fee and rural schools as well as support for rewrites and second-chance programmes.
