South Africa Raises December Fuel Prices as Diesel Sees Sharpest Increase

Diesel's steeper jump is expected to lift transport costs over the festive season.

Overview

  • From 3 December, petrol 93 and 95 increase by 29c/l, diesel 0.05% by 65.48c/l, diesel 0.005% by 82.48c/l, and illuminating paraffin by 74.48c/l, with the SMNRP for paraffin up 99c/l.
  • Published pump prices show Petrol 95 at R21.41 per litre in Gauteng and R20.58 at the coast.
  • The DMRE cites higher international product prices driven by refinery outages and stronger margins, slightly lower Brent crude, and a modestly firmer rand.
  • The slate levy remains at 0c/l due to a positive R4.36bn balance, and RAS-approved margin increases add 3.6c/l on petrol and 5.48c/l on diesel and illuminating paraffin.
  • The maximum LPG retail price rises by 24c/kg nationally and by 9c/kg in the Western Cape, while transport and agriculture groups warn of pass-through cost pressures for consumers.
