The G20 is made up of 19 nations and two regional organisations

Overview

  • President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a six-member experts group to assess wealth and income gaps and their effects on growth, poverty and multilateralism.
  • The group is chaired by Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz and includes UNAIDS chief Winnie Byanyima and economist Jayati Ghosh.
  • Findings and recommendations will be delivered to G20 leaders at the Johannesburg summit in November.
  • South Africa is using its 2025 G20 presidency to elevate priorities of poorer nations, citing rising inequality, sovereign debt burdens and unequal vaccine distribution.
  • The effort reopens debate on taxing the wealthy as previous measures, including the OECD’s 15% global minimum tax, face resistance and uncertain prospects.
