Sony to Upgrade PS5 Pro with AMD FSR 4-Like Upscaling by 2026

The collaboration between Sony and AMD under Project Amethyst will bring advanced AI-powered upscaling to the PS5 Pro, enhancing its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology.

Sony plans to integrate a version of AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) into the PS5 Pro by 2026, evolving its current PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology.
FSR 4, co-developed with AMD as part of Project Amethyst, utilizes machine learning for more detailed image upscaling and surpasses the crispness of the existing PSSR system.
The implementation will require a reworking of FSR 4's neural network to suit the PS5 Pro's architecture, as the console's hardware differs significantly from AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs.
Mark Cerny, PlayStation's lead system architect, emphasized the collaboration's long-term goals of improving machine learning and ray tracing capabilities for future PlayStation hardware.
Sony's partnership with AMD is expected to influence the development of the PlayStation 6, with further advancements in AI-driven graphics and upscaling technologies.
