Sony Launches Free Live TV App on PS5

The ad-supported channel aggregator brings more than 100 live feeds plus a curated on-demand library to the PS5 and strengthens Sony’s push to make the console a living-room media hub.

Overview

  • Sony has rolled out Live TV on PS5 in the United States as a free, ad-supported app built into the console’s Media section that gives players access to live channels and a growing on-demand catalog.
  • The service aggregates more than 100 live channels and curated on-demand content with partners that include Lionsgate, Crunchyroll, Fox, NBCUniversal, A+E and FilmRise, with example offerings spanning movies, TV series and anime.
  • Sports, news and weather feeds are part of the lineup, with programming from FOX Sports, NASCAR, NBC Sports Now, UFC, NBC News Now, Fox Weather and LiveNOW from FOX.
  • Sony is positioning the app to sell targeted ads on PlayStation by working with connected-TV ad platforms and by using the console’s audience to reach viewers advertisers find hard to reach.
  • The company says Live TV on PS5 will add channels and programs over time and plans to expand to Canada and other regions, a move that could extend the PS5’s role beyond gaming into a wider streaming platform.
