Sony Brings QSSR AI Upscaler to the Standard PS5

The lighter upscaler uses a streamlined neural network tuned for original PS5 hardware to deliver sharper images and steadier motion when developers enable it.

Overview

  • Sony rolled out Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) as an opt-in graphics mode with patches for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei that began appearing on PS5 on October 1.
  • PlayStation is distributing QSSR developer tools so other studios can add the option, but each game must be patched individually and adoption is voluntary.
  • Early technical testing by Digital Foundry finds clear image and temporal-stability gains in some scenes, calling QSSR’s potential “remarkable” and especially noting strong improvement in Wolverine.
  • QSSR is a trimmed version of PS5 Pro’s PSSR that uses a hand-tuned implementation to run without the Pro’s dedicated machine-learning silicon so developers will generally target lower internal or output resolutions than Pro PSSR.
  • QSSR grew from Sony’s Project Amethyst work with AMD and brings some PSSR benefits to more players while leaving the PS5 Pro’s full PSSR on higher-spec hardware as the superior option.
