Sony Announces LYTIA 720 50MP Mobile Image Sensor

Sony says the new 1/1.56-type stacked CMOS chip brings high-end LYTIA imaging tech to a format used widely in smartphones to boost low-light and HDR video performance.

Overview

  • Sony announced the LYTIA 720 as an approximately 50-effective megapixel stacked CMOS sensor designed for smartphone main cameras.
  • The company says a proprietary Ultra High Conversion Gain (UHCG) low-noise circuit cuts random noise in dark scenes by about half versus its prior LYTIA 700 sensor.
  • Sony reports a 100 dB dynamic range using Hybrid Frame-HDR, which combines DCG-HDR data with a short-exposure frame to protect highlights.
  • The firm says optimized analog-to-digital conversion lets the sensor record 4K 60 fps HDR video with all-pixel autofocus active and supports higher readout rates when HDR is off.
  • Sony lists mass-production shipments as planned in the near term and notes that independent benchmarks and phone-maker adoption will determine real-world gains for users.
