Sony and AMD Detail Project Amethyst, Charting Next-Gen PlayStation Graphics

Cerny says the tech is planned for a future console in a few years without committing to a launch date.

Overview

  • In an official video, PlayStation architect Mark Cerny and AMD executive Jack Huynh outlined a co-developed roadmap called Project Amethyst for machine-learning-driven graphics and gameplay.
  • The effort centers on three components: Neural Arrays to scale up AI upscaling and denoising workloads, Radiance Cores as dedicated hardware for real-time ray and path tracing, and Universal Compression to cut GPU memory bandwidth demands.
  • Cerny emphasized the features are in very early stages and “only exist in simulation,” noting current PS5 and PS5 Pro hardware cannot implement them due to architectural constraints.
  • Huynh said AMD intends to deliver these capabilities to developers across every gaming platform, with Universal Compression headed to future AMD SoCs and GPUs and potential benefits for PCs and other devices.
  • Reporters framed Cerny’s reference to a “future console in a few years” as a PS6 tease and speculated on late-decade timing, but neither specifications nor a release window were confirmed.
