Sonowal Lodges FIR Over Forged Letter Ahead of Assam Polls

Delhi Police opened a probe after his office said a viral document used a fake letterhead with a forged signature.

Overview

  • The complaint at Parliament Street police station in New Delhi, filed by assistant private secretary Mukul Chandra Lahkar, alleges forgery and impersonation with malafide intent to cause political disharmony and tarnish the minister’s reputation.
  • Sonowal’s office termed the letter completely fake and fabricated and urged the public and media not to circulate it, asking that information be verified only through official sources.
  • The document, dated January 15 and addressed to BJP president J. P. Nadda, claimed a “serious ground situation” and called for course correction before the 2026 Assam assembly elections.
  • Coverage of the forged text notes calls for an alternative chief ministerial face and allegations against Himanta Biswa Sarma and his family, which officials say are part of the fabrication.
  • Police registered a case under cheating and forgery provisions, began a priority investigation to trace the origin and digital trail, and the probe was assigned to a Delhi Police technology unit, according to IANS.
