Sonowal, Delhi Leaders Review Yamuna Cruise Corridor Works

A Centre–Delhi pact enables electric-solar boats with new passenger facilities on a short Sonia Vihar–Jagatpur route.

Overview

  • Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Delhi lieutenant governor, and city ministers inspected progress at Sonia Vihar on November 18 to assess jetties, safety systems and route planning.
  • The Inland Waterways Authority of India and Delhi government agencies have an MoU in place to develop a corridor on National Waterway 110 upstream of the Wazirabad Barrage.
  • Initial infrastructure includes two floating jetties installed by IWAI at Sonia Vihar, each designed for 50 passengers, with additional parking and recreation amenities planned.
  • Operations are planned with electric‑solar hybrid vessels carrying about 30–40 passengers and equipped with life jackets and public announcement systems.
  • Officials cite a project outlay of roughly ₹20 crore for a 6–7 km round‑trip route intended to spur tourism, expand water transport and support Yamuna rejuvenation, with no launch date announced.
