Overview
- Users have reported burning plastic odors, unusual noises and partial melting at the USB-C port of first-generation Roam speakers in posts dating back to 2022.
- Sonos has confirmed a “very low” incidence of these overheating and melting complaints and says it has closely tracked all reports.
- The company has declined to issue a formal recall, attributing incidents in part to environmental conditions and prolonged wall-outlet charging.
- To reduce future risks, Sonos is rolling out software updates and hardware improvements and has replaced devices when customers provided failure evidence.
- The original Roam, released in 2021 and since discontinued, was succeeded by the Roam 2 in 2024, which so far appears largely unaffected by the issue.
