Sonora Kicks Off Major Airport Upgrades in Ciudad Obregón and Guaymas

A coordinated federal and state investment will strengthen air connectivity, unlocking economic expansion in southern Sonora.

Overview

  • Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño and Secretary of the Navy Raymundo Pedro Morales Ángeles formally launched modernization works at Ciudad Obregón and Guaymas airports with initial investments of 550 million and 483 million pesos respectively.
  • Upgrades at Ciudad Obregón include a 500-meter runway extension, a new control tower, parking rehabilitation, terminal expansions and enhanced safety systems.
  • The Plan Maestro de Desarrollo, managed by the Secretaría de Marina, spans 11 airports under Grupo Aeroportuario Marina to bolster infrastructure, security capabilities and revenue generation.
  • Viva Aerobus will establish a maintenance hangar at Ciudad Obregón Airport, employing 200 workers initially and scaling up to 3,000 by 2030.
  • Upcoming phases schedule hangar rehabilitation in August, waiting-room enlargement in October and control tower construction in November to ensure uninterrupted operations.
