Sonora Kicks Off Irrigation Overhaul in Río Mayo and Yaqui With MXN 6.5 Billion Plan

Works aim to boost farm efficiency to free water for homes.

Overview

  • Conagua chief Efraín Morales and Governor Alfonso Durazo launched the technification program for Irrigation Districts 038 (Río Mayo) and 041 (Valle del Yaqui) during events in southern Sonora.
  • Authorities outlined total funding of 6,500 million pesos through 2030, with 600 million pesos allocated in 2025, described as 300 million pesos for each district.
  • The program targets roughly 20,000 to 21,700 hectares and is presented as benefiting about 9,700 producers in the region.
  • Initial works include lining and entubado of canals, rehabilitation of deep wells and pumping plants, drip irrigation and land leveling, with 2025 deliverables such as more than 26 kilometers of canal lining, well and structure repairs, and over 1,200 hectares technified.
  • Officials linked the upgrades to water recovery for human consumption, citing estimates such as about 31.5 million m3 in District 038 and around 10 million m3 in District 041, while some local accounts report higher figures and authorities stated savings of more than 130 million m3 this year.
