Sonora Begins BMC Electric Vehicle Prototyping at ITH

A public–private team led by Beyond Borders Automotive México is positioning the project for fleet use with a roadmap to local battery making.

Overview

  • Construction of a show car and a functional prototype is underway at the CIISE facility of the Instituto Tecnológico de Hermosillo.
  • The developer set a timeline to unveil a show car in the first half of 2026 and a working prototype by late 2026, with mass production pursued within three to five years.
  • Initial output is targeted at roughly 2,000 units, with an ambition to scale capacity to about 18,000 vehicles per year.
  • BMC plans to begin by assembling battery packs with U.S.-made lithium cells before shifting to cell and full battery production in Sonora.
  • The vehicle is pitched as modular for Mobility-as-a-Service fleets, with early configurations of 55–120 kWh and an estimated 350–450 km range per charge.
