Police have arrested a driver on felony hit-and-run charges after a scooter rider was killed

Overview

  • A 2001 Ford truck swerved out of its lane at high speed on Berryessa Road at Summerpark Court on Monday, struck a tree and burst into flames; the driver was pulled free by fire crews but died later at hospital.
  • On Saturday evening a 2005 Chevy Astron veered into the Capitol Expressway bike lane at Tuers Road and hit a scooter rider who was hospitalized, stabilized, then died Monday, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner.
  • Officers arrested the Chevy driver nearby on felony hit-and-run and DUI charges after he fled the scene.
  • These two collisions represent San Jose’s 18th and 19th traffic fatalities this year.
  • Police and the California Highway Patrol are probing both crashes, examining factors such as speeding, lane departures and driver impairment.
