Solo Bread Opens First Cafe in Rock Ferry

The cafe marks a pivot toward higher-margin retail.

Overview

  • Solo Bread opened its Rock Ferry cafe at 10am Friday at 220 Bebington Road, with long queues reported at launch.
  • The new site replaces the bakery’s Birkenhead industrial unit and will trade Fridays to Sundays from 10am.
  • Founder Harry Doherty said the shop adds direct retail to a business that was about 90% wholesale to improve margins and raise staff pay.
  • The bakery focuses on naturally leavened loaves made with organic, stoneground UK-grown grains, which keep the whole grain for deeper flavor and more nutrients.
  • Doherty built Solo from a garage with about £2,000, grew a following through Instagram and an Oxton Market stall, and later earned a Good Food Guide Top 50 Bakeries nod.
