Solingen Attacker Files Appeal as Düsseldorf Opens New IS-Linked Terror Trial

The Federal Court of Justice will review the Solingen verdict once the defense submits its reasons.

Overview

  • Issa al Hasan appealed a day after being sentenced in Düsseldorf to life imprisonment with preventive detention, with the court finding a particular severity of guilt.
  • Judges convicted him of three murders, multiple attempted murders and IS membership, citing chat logs, pledge and claim videos, and the proven knife purchase, after he admitted the stabbings.
  • The court awarded compensation to survivors, including individual sums reaching 120,000 euros, following the 2024 attack that killed three people and left several others seriously injured.
  • In a separate case, a 26-year-old Iranian went on trial in Düsseldorf over alleged preparation of attacks and support for IS, with his phone holding files on an atomic-type explosion, ricin production and lone-wolf tactics.
  • Prosecutors say he was arrested at Hannover airport en route to Turkey to join IS, while the defense denies any intent and says the files were not viewed; his refugee status was revoked and eleven hearing days are scheduled.
