Solange Launches Saint Heron Community Library for Rare Black and Brown Works

An honor-based lending model extends access to out-of-print works by Black and Brown creators beyond traditional archives.

Overview

  • The library opened this week with an initial 65-title collection, including Langston Hughes’s Shakespeare in Harlem and Octavia E. Butler’s Bloodchild.
  • Borrowers register online with a credit card on file, may request one book at a time, and loans are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Items are loaned for 45 days with complimentary return postage, and charges apply for lost or damaged materials after reminder notices.
  • Saint Heron sponsors the archive, which Solange described as a small effort to provide free access to the critical thought and expression of Black and Brown artists and writers.
  • Registration details are being shared via Solange’s Instagram as the public portal rolls out, building on a 2021 collaboration with Rosa Duffy’s For Keeps Bookstore.
