Solange Becomes USC Thornton’s First Campus-Wide Scholar-in-Residence to Build Music Curation Curriculum

The three-year role launches collaboration with Saint Heron to formalize music curation in USC’s curriculum.

Overview

  • The custom three-year appointment began with a sold-out Oct. 13 kickoff conversation, “Beyond Category,” at USC’s Newman Recital Hall with Dean Jason King and Saint Heron collaborators.
  • Solange will develop and teach a course tentatively titled “Records of Discovery: Methodologies for Music and Cultural Curatorial Practices,” planned for fall 2027.
  • She joins USC Thornton’s Dean’s Creative Vanguard Program as its second member, following Raphael Saadiq’s selection as the inaugural member in December 2024.
  • The residency includes student workshops and public programming, including a session on “The Making of Eldorado Ballroom,” and participation in a symposium highlighting women in classical music such as Julia Perry.
  • USC describes the appointment as its first all-school scholar-in-residence at this level, with Solange working across the school and drawing on Saint Heron’s archival and curatorial resources.
