Solana Schedules Alpenglow Upgrade for Oct. 21 With 150ms Finality Target

The change swaps TowerBFT for Anza’s Votor and moves validator votes off-chain to speed irreversible settlement for admitted validators.

Overview

  • The Alpenglow Votor phase will activate on mainnet on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at epoch 1064 and validators must run Agave 4.3.2 or a supported client before the epoch boundary.
  • Validators must fund vote accounts with at least 0.8 SOL to pay the Validator Admission Ticket or they cannot vote or produce blocks in the following epoch.
  • The 150-millisecond figure is an engineering target not a guarantee, and real-world finality will depend on validator participation and live-network conditions.
  • Providers such as Quicknode warn the consensus handoff may briefly pause new transactions entering blocks and disrupt data streams or subscriptions for a short period.
  • Removing on-chain vote transactions will lower headline transaction counts and force explorers, indexers and analytics teams to re-baseline metrics while unstaked RPC nodes may see later finality signals.
