Overview
- Solana has set mainnet activation for Alpenglow on Wednesday, Oct. 21, with the switch tied to epoch 1064 and the live takeover expected about 5,000 slots (roughly 18 minutes) into the epoch.
- Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT with a new voting layer called Votor that moves validator votes off-chain and aggregates certificates so blocks can reach finality in one or two rounds.
- The 150-millisecond finality figure is a stated target that depends on live network conditions and does not change transaction formats, program logic, account models, or user signing flows.
- Validators must run Agave-based clients (Agave 4.3.0) for the migration and operators running Firedancer or Frankendancer will need to switch software temporarily for activation.
- Removing on-chain vote transactions will sharply cut headline transaction counts and TPS overnight, so indexers, explorers and services must re-baseline metrics and handle new block/footer fields while markets watch SOL pricing and Rotor remains scheduled for a later release.
