Overview

  • The SSA will issue Supplemental Security Income on Friday, Aug. 1, and benefits for those who began receiving payments before May 1997 on Saturday, Aug. 2, because the usual Aug. 3 date falls on a weekend.
  • Regular retirement benefits will be disbursed in three waves on Aug. 13, 20 and 27 based on recipients’ birth dates to maintain the standard calendar-driven schedule.
  • As of July, the agency is withholding up to 50% of monthly payments to recoup overpayments identified in a February inspector general report that flagged $13.6 billion in excess disbursements.
  • Federal benefit maximums for 2025 remain at $967 for individuals, $1,450 for eligible spouses and $484 for essential persons, with delayed filers at age 70 eligible for up to $5,108 per month.
  • The SSA has postponed its shift from paper checks to direct deposits beyond September to address access and literacy concerns among beneficiaries.
