Social Security Payments Stay On Schedule During Shutdown, With $200 Boost Proposed for Early 2026

Checks are going out by birth‑date waves, with COLA changes starting for SSI at the end of December.

Overview

  • November retirement benefits are being issued in three waves: Nov. 12 for birthdays on the 1st–10th, Nov. 19 for the 11th–20th, and Nov. 26 for the 21st–31st.
  • Key online services, including benefit verification letters and replacement Medicare cards via my Social Security, remain available despite the federal shutdown.
  • The next SSI payment arrives Dec. 1, with up to $967 for individual recipients, and January’s SSI will be paid early on Dec. 31 because of the New Year’s Day holiday.
  • A 2.8% COLA is set for 2026, taking effect for SSI in December and for most other beneficiaries in January, which equates to roughly $56 more per month for the average retiree.
  • Senate Democrats have introduced a bill to add a tax‑free $200 monthly supplement from January through June 2026 for Social Security, SSI, railroad retirement, and certain veterans’ benefits, which has not been enacted.
