Social Security Distributes Aug. 20 Payments and Begins 50% Overpayment Withholdings

September’s SSI checks will be issued on Aug. 29 to accommodate the Labor Day holiday.

  • Recipients born between the 11th and 20th of the month will receive their retirement, survivor or spousal benefits on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
  • After a February OIG report flagged $13.6 billion in overpayments since 2020, the SSA will withhold up to 50% of monthly benefits from affected recipients who have not arranged repayments.
  • September Supplemental Security Income disbursements are shifted to Friday, Aug. 29, since Sept. 1 falls on Labor Day.
