Social Security Confirms Dec. 24 Payments On Time as 2026 Calendar Pushes January Dates Later

The 2026 calendar shifts most January deposits to the 14th, 21st and 28th.

Overview

  • Recipients born after the 20th receive their December payment on Dec. 24, with direct deposits proceeding as scheduled and mailed checks potentially arriving later.
  • January 2026 payments follow the SSA’s birth‑date schedule: Jan. 14 (birthdays 1–10), Jan. 21 (11–20) and Jan. 28 (21–31).
  • Beneficiaries who began receiving retirement, spousal or survivor benefits before May 1997 are paid on Friday, Jan. 2, and SSI for January is issued on Dec. 31.
  • SSA field offices operate 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time on Dec. 24 and Dec. 26 and are closed on Dec. 25 for Christmas.
  • A 2.8% cost‑of‑living adjustment starts in January, lifting average monthly benefits by about $56 for more than 70 million recipients.
