São Paulo State Crime Falls to 25-Year Low Through November as Capital Sees Monthly Homicide Rise

Officials stress targeted arrests for violence against women as a priority response.

  • The SSP reported November declines statewide in intentional homicides to 186 (down 13%) and in latrocinios to 11, with rapes totaling 1,157, seven fewer than a year earlier.
  • From January to November, the state recorded 2,194 intentional homicides and 120 latrocinios, the lowest levels for the period since the series began in 2001.
  • Statewide property crime also receded in November, with robberies falling to 11,386 (down 22.95%) and thefts to 43,911 (down 5.1%).
  • In the city of São Paulo, November homicides rose 12.5% to 45 victims, rapes edged up to about 260 and thefts to roughly 20,500, while robberies dropped 20.1% to about 7,200.
