São Paulo Sets Jan. 6 Fare Hikes to R$5.30 on Buses and R$5.40 on Metro as Regional Increases Roll Out

Officials cite rising operating costs and subsidy strain as the rationale.

Overview

  • São Paulo’s municipal bus fare will rise from R$5.00 to R$5.30 on January 6, with the measure sent to the City Council for required procedures.
  • State-run metro and commuter trains will increase from R$5.20 to R$5.40 on January 6, a 3.85% adjustment reported as below the IPC-Fipe inflation gauge, with existing gratuities maintained.
  • Osasco, Barueri, Carapicuíba, Jandira and Itapevi set a R$6.10 bus fare starting January 5, citing cost recomposition to preserve service quality and regularity.
  • Florianópolis will adjust fares from January 1 to R$6.20 with the Cartão Cidadão and R$7.70 for cash or QR Code payments, and cash payments onboard buses will end on January 5 except at terminals.
  • SPTrans says Bilhete Único credits loaded by 11:59 p.m. on January 5 will be debited at R$5.00 for up to 180 days, as the city notes subsidies keep the passenger fare well below an estimated R$11.78 full cost.
