São Paulo Raises Bus, Metro and Train Fares for Jan. 6 as Regional Cities Announce January Hikes

Officials cite rising operating costs and say gratuities and subsidies will be maintained.

Overview

  • São Paulo’s municipal bus fare increases from R$ 5.00 to R$ 5.30 on January 6, with Bilhete Único credits loaded by 11:59 p.m. on January 5 still debited at R$ 5 for up to 180 days.
  • State-run metro and commuter trains rise from R$ 5.20 to R$ 5.40 on January 6 after authorization sent to Alesp, a 3.85% adjustment that the government says is below measured inflation.
  • Five Greater São Paulo municipalities—Osasco, Barueri, Carapicuíba, Jandira and Itapevi—set bus fares at R$ 6.10 starting January 5 under a joint announcement by their mayors.
  • Florianópolis implements new fares on January 1 at R$ 6.20 with the Cartão Cidadão and R$ 7.70 for cash or QR Pix, and cash payments on buses end on January 5 with cash accepted only at terminals.
  • Authorities say the updates reflect higher costs for energy, maintenance and payroll, pledge to keep existing gratuities such as Sunday zero-fare programs, and note continued subsidies including about R$ 5.1 billion for the metro-rail system.
