São Paulo Raises Bus and Rail Fares as New Rates Take Effect

City cites sector cost index alongside heavy subsidies to defend the bus fare rise.

Overview

  • From today, bus trips cost R$5.30 and metro and commuter trains cost R$5.40 across São Paulo’s network.
  • The integrated fare for transfers between bus and rail increased from R$8.90 to R$9.38, according to state-operated system updates.
  • The bus fare rose 6% from R$5.00, outpacing 2025 IPCA inflation of 4.5%, while the rail fare moved up 3.85% from R$5.20.
  • Bus services are managed by the municipal government under Ricardo Nunes, whereas metro and trains fall under the state administration led by Tarcísio de Freitas.
  • The city says it based the bus adjustment on the IPC-Fipe public-transport index at roughly 6.5% and notes subsidies keep the fare far below an estimated unsubsidized R$11.78, with Bilhete Único credits loaded before Jan. 6 preserving old prices for up to 180 days.
