São Paulo Raids Uncover 100,000 Bottles in Expanding Counterfeit Liquor Network

The seizures point to organized reuse of original bottles tied to recent methanol poisonings.

Overview

  • Police shut a clandestine warehouse in Vila Formosa that held more than 100,000 empty bottles of distilled spirits and 6,000 bottles filled with alcohol of unproven origin.
  • Health Surveillance interdicted the Vila Formosa site operating as an undocumented recyclables business, and two men aged 46 and 61 were charged for offenses related to beverage falsification.
  • A separate operation in Santo André led to the arrest of a 40-year-old suspect and the seizure of 54 boxes with more than 1,500 counterfeiting items, including labels, caps, dyes, and liquids resembling whisky.
  • Notebooks with logistical notes were collected in Santo André, and forensic analysis was requested to assess the authenticity and composition of seized materials.
  • In Campinas, investigators found washed bottles of multiple brands at a chácara and opened an inquiry with no arrests, as the broader task force reports 16,000 bottles seized and 20 arrests to date.
