São Paulo Places Most of State in Emergency Wildfire Risk Through Monday

Exceptionally dry air and scant rain are driving the peak danger, with officials projecting a gradual easing from Tuesday.

Overview

  • Defesa Civil maps show emergency-level wildfire risk across large areas on Sunday and project virtually the entire state at the top tier on Monday, the highest risk seen this year.
  • The Vale do Paraíba faces elevated danger, with much of the region on alert Sunday and moving into alert and emergency classifications on Monday.
  • Inmet warns relative humidity could drop below 30% in parts of the state and forecasts little significant rainfall in the short term.
  • Despite the acute conditions, INPE reports 2,053 fire hotspots in 2025 versus 8,255 over the same period in 2024, and satellites showed no active hotspots by midday Sunday.
  • Recent vegetation fires were controlled in São Luiz do Paraitinga, Martinópolis and Araçatuba, and additional large incidents were reported Sunday in cities including Presidente Prudente and Presidente Venceslau without injuries.
