Snowstorm Disrupts Central Spain With Ávila and Segovia Hardest Hit

Officials urge motorists to check DGT road updates with alerts in force through January 19.

  • Spain’s transport ministry deployed 633 snowploughs and 116,425 tonnes of de-icers to respond across Castilla y León and Aragón.
  • More than 50 roads in eight provinces were affected by late morning, according to Transportes and the DGT.
  • Chains are mandatory and heavy vehicles are barred on key stretches including the AP-6 (La Mata–Sanchidrián), AP-51 (Brieva–Vicolozano), AP-61 (El EspinarHontoria), A-1 (El MolarCerezo de Abajo) and A-50 (ÁvilaSan Pedro del Arroyo).
  • The Guardia Civil held trucks at several points due to snowfall, while Ávila’s provincial service fielded over 30 operators and about a dozen ploughs and Segovia’s city crews salted priority areas.
  • AEMET maintained orange and yellow snowfall warnings for parts of the region, estimating up to 10 cm in Ávila’s Sistema Central and 15 cm in Segovia’s sector, as Valladolid reported snowfall with traffic flowing normally.
