Snowdon Inquest Rules Accidental Death in 500ft Fall of Edinburgh Medical Student

The coroner cited treacherous winds with poor visibility as likely causes of a disorientated fall.

Overview

  • John Aravinth, 20, became lost after continuing toward the summit on the Llanberis Path when his father and sister turned back.
  • He phoned his father to say he was lost, with police logging two dropped 999 calls in which he sounded distressed and requested mountain rescue.
  • Llanberis Mountain Rescue described conditions as beyond atrocious, with gusts up to 78mph that forced the 18-hour search to pause overnight.
  • A coastguard helicopter located his body at Cwm Glas, north-east of Garnedd Ugain, after a fall of more than 150 metres that caused a fatal head injury.
  • Evidence to the Caernarfon inquest noted he was extremely short-sighted with misting glasses, which likely contributed to disorientation.
