Snowboarder Rescued After 100-Foot Fall Into Crevasse on Colorado Glacier

The hours-long, multi-agency operation raised the unidentified 27-year-old from a bergschrund for a medevac on a route rated highly challenging.

Overview

  • Dispatch received the emergency call around 2:25 p.m. on Sept. 8 near Skyscraper Glacier north of Rollins Pass in Boulder County.
  • The snowboarder slid roughly 100 feet and came to rest in a bergschrund, with rescuers reaching and treating him at about 5:45 p.m. after a 300-foot traverse over glacial snow.
  • Responders included Rocky Mountain Rescue Group volunteers, Grand County Search and Rescue, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office and EMS, with the Colorado Search and Rescue Association coordinating National Guard hoist communications and Northern Colorado MedEvac assisting by air.
  • An uphaul system raised the patient to the top of the snowfield, then another 50 feet over an eroding ridge, before a medevac flight to a hospital at approximately 8:10 p.m.
  • The mission concluded around 1 a.m. on Sept. 9, and officials had not released the man’s identity or condition as of reports published Sept. 11–12.
