Snow Triggers Collapse of Circus Animal Tent in Lüdenscheid

Fire crews carried out an outside-only rescue that left every animal unhurt.

Overview

  • The 30-by-10-meter structure failed around 00:20 after heavy overnight snowfall, according to director Rudolf Renz.
  • Firefighters avoided entering the unstable tent, cutting open side panels with side-cutters and ladders to free the animals.
  • Seven horses, one pony, two llamas and two camels were rescued without injuries and remained calm during the operation.
  • The collapsed animal tent was declared a total loss, with the animals relocated to the intact main performance tent.
  • Despite the damage, the circus planned to hold its final scheduled show today in Lüdenscheid.
