Snow Spreads in the North as JMA Warns of Weekend Blizzards and High Winds

Two rapidly developing lows are forecast to pound northern Japan through Sunday.

Overview

  • NHH reports continued snowfall across Hokkaido and Tohoku, with rain and stronger winds extending into western Japan and a chance of snow in northern Kanto.
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency cautions that Dec. 14–15 could bring blizzard conditions in parts of Hokkaido and heavy rain that raises landslide risk in Tohoku.
  • Forecast peak winds on Dec. 14 are 25 m/s in Hokkaido with gusts to 35 m/s, and 23 m/s in Tohoku and Hokuriku with similar peak gusts.
  • One low is expected to rapidly intensify along Honshu’s Pacific coast toward Hokkaido as another develops from the central Sea of Japan toward Tohoku, with high waves also a concern for Hokuriku.
  • Okinawa-area observatories report cloudy, showery conditions with strengthening northerlies, and the Daito Islands’ coastal waves are forecast to build to about 3 meters.
