Snow, Ice and High Winds Disrupt Germany as DWD Issues Orange Alerts

The DWD expects dangerous refreezing overnight, with some northern areas under orange snow warnings and parts of the south facing severe frost.

Overview

  • Germany’s weather service warns of widespread glätte, persistent snow showers and stormy gusts, with up to 15 cm of snow in parts of the north between Hamburg and Bremen and heavy coastal gusts near 100 km/h.
  • Police report numerous crashes across several states, including 56 glätte-related accidents around Oldenburg, dozens in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and closures after jackknifed trucks on major Autobahnen.
  • A salmon lorry overturned on Bavaria’s A93, spilling its load and forcing a closure for around ten to twelve hours, while a separate truck crash shut the A1 near Bremen; most injuries reported elsewhere were minor.
  • Hamburg’s Köhlbrandbrücke was snarled for hours as vehicles stalled on the icy ascent, and regional public transport saw cancellations and suspensions, including NVV morning buses, Würzburg city buses and HVV lines.
  • Forecasters highlight renewed overnight ice hazards and very cold nights ahead, with temperatures down to about −15°C in the south and continuing snow showers keeping travel risks elevated.
