Snow and Ice Snarl UK Travel as M62 Reopens, A74(M) Clears and M1 Lanes Shut

Authorities shift from emergency response to route clearance after days of severe weather.

Overview

  • Police Scotland said the A74(M) between junctions 14 and 16 fully reopened with no hospital admissions after multiple icy-condition collisions.
  • National Highways confirmed the M62 has reopened in both directions following a lorry fire between J21 and J22, after GMFRS extinguished the blaze and recovery cleared the eastbound side overnight.
  • Three of four lanes on the M1 northbound remain closed between J28 (Mansfield) and J29 (Chesterfield) after a lorry crash, with recovery underway and winter fleet vehicles dispatched to clear settled snow.
  • National Highways reported two of three lanes shut on the M5 northbound between J4 and J3 near Birmingham due to snow, with delays of around 40 to 60 minutes and traffic officers and ploughs deployed.
  • The Met Office maintains yellow warnings for snow and ice, and Scottish leaders say efforts now focus on recovery and clearing priority routes following the prolonged cold spell.
