Overview
- In a Cadena SER interview on Tuesday, Pedro Sánchez said he does not comment on Nobel awards and therefore would not congratulate Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.
- Sánchez expressed respect for Machado's work and reiterated that Spain has been firm in rejecting recognition of Venezuela's recent election results, while declining to assess whether the prize was deserved.
- Social media users and outlets resurfaced posts showing Sánchez publicly congratulated past Nobel Peace laureates, including Juan Manuel Santos (2016), Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad (2018), Abiy Ahmed (2019) and the World Food Programme (2020).
- PP vice-secretary Alma Ezcurra called the government's silence “shameful” and accused Sánchez of political calculation regarding Nicolás Maduro and former mediator José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
- The PP said it will introduce institutional declarations in both chambers recognizing Machado, escalating the dispute in Congress and the Senate.
