Overview
- Snap unveiled Specs at the Augmented World Expo on Tuesday, pricing the autonomous AR glasses at $2,195 and saying shipments to the United States, United Kingdom and France will begin later this year.
- The glasses run dual Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, use an LCoS waveguide display that Snap says offers a wide field of view, and provide about four hours of mixed use battery life with up to 20 hours when recharged in the carrying case.
- Investors pushed Snap shares down more than 5% after the announcement and analysts warned the premium price and typical wearable limits such as weight and battery life could restrict consumer adoption.
- Specs put Snap in direct competition with other tech firms pursuing smart eyewear by trading off price, comfort and ecosystem strength against rivals such as Meta’s Ray-Ban line and Apple’s Vision Pro.
- The launch tests whether Snap can convert its decade-plus lead in AR tools and developer content into profitable hardware sales while its large R&D bill and activist investor pressure raise the cost of failure.
