SNAP Payments Update: December Disbursements Nearing End in California and Delaware, January Payments to Begin Soon in Montana

Payments, worth up to $1,751, are determined by household size and income, with benefits loaded onto an electronic benefits transfer card for use at participating locations.

  • December SNAP payments, worth up to $1,751, will end in two days for California residents, in 15 days for Delaware residents, and January payments will begin in 25 days for Montana residents.
  • SNAP payments are determined by household size, with single-person households receiving $291, and eight-person households receiving $1,751. In households larger than eight, $219 is included for each additional person.
  • SNAP benefits are loaded onto an electronic benefits transfer card, which can be used like a debit card for food and nonalcoholic drinks at participating locations, including farmers markets and grocery stores.
  • To qualify for SNAP payments, a household's income cannot exceed certain limits. For example, in Montana, a single-person household cannot have a net monthly income above $1,215, and an eight-person household cannot have a net monthly income above $4,214.
  • SNAP, created through the 1964 Food Stamp Act as one of President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society programs, aims to improve the nutrition of impoverished people by supplementing their food costs. It is active across all states and Washington, D.C., with some variations among the programs.
