Overview
- Snap unveiled Specs on Tuesday at the Augmented World Expo and opened preorders with a $200 refundable deposit and a fall 2026 ship window for the US, UK and France.
- The standalone glasses pack two Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, a proprietary display with about a 51° field of view, electrochromic lenses that tint in roughly 10 seconds, and roughly four hours of mixed-use battery life plus a charging case that adds up to about 20 hours.
- Snap is pushing developer tools that integrate with AI coding platforms such as Anthropic’s Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex and Cursor so creators can build agent-like AR Lenses and other spatial apps.
- CEO Evan Spiegel defended the business as a long-term strategic bet, noting Specs Inc. was formed to support the effort and that Snap will pursue partnerships and outside funding rather than immediately spinning the unit off.
- Availability will be limited at first with reports of an initial production run near 100,000 units, and the product’s success will hinge on developer buy-in, consumer acceptance of a $2,195 price, and how Snap handles privacy and real-world social concerns.
