Preston Stone, a junior quarterback from SMU, has announced his transfer to Northwestern for the 2025 college football season.
Stone began the 2023 season as SMU's starting quarterback, throwing for 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns, but lost his starting role to Kevin Jennings in 2024.
Northwestern is looking to improve its struggling passing offense, which ranked 110th nationally in 2024 with only seven passing touchdowns.
Stone visited Northwestern last week and will join a roster that includes returning quarterbacks Jack Lausch and Mike Wright.
SMU coach Rhett Lashlee supported Stone's decision not to play in SMU's College Football Playoff game against Penn State, citing the quarterback's upcoming transfer opportunity.
