Overview

• The blaze began just after midnight on June 11 in a first-floor apartment at 9805 Bianco Terrace in the northwest suburbs.
• North Maine Fire Protection District crews, aided by Des Plaines and Niles fire departments, contained the fire quickly.
• Firefighters found a 60-year-old man unresponsive near the unit’s back door and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
• The Office of the State Fire Marshal determined the fire was sparked by careless disposal of smoking materials.
• No other injuries were reported and authorities have not released the victim’s identity.
