SMN Warns of Very Heavy Rains Across Mexico From Thursday to Saturday

Forecasters attribute the threat to the Mexican monsoon interacting with tropical waves, heightening risks of flooding, landslides and hazardous surf.

  • Chiapas, Tabasco and Campeche are forecast to see very heavy to intense rainfall of 75–150 mm on Thursday, according to SMN.
  • Guerrero (east) and Oaxaca (west) are expected to receive very heavy to intense rains on Friday, with elevated flood and slide risk.
  • Strong to very strong rainfall, electrical storms and possible hail are forecast across numerous states including Sonora, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán and Veracruz.
  • Coastal hazards include 40–60 km/h wind gusts in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec and waves of 2.5–3.5 meters along the Oaxaca and Chiapas coasts.
  • The multi-day outlook extends through Saturday with continued strong rains in Oaxaca and Chiapas, and authorities urge precautions for rising rivers, urban flooding and slope failures while noting no official changes to the school calendar.
